Erected during the First World War for the New Zealand Insurance Company, this was one of Auckland's first high rise buildings.
The Guardian Trust Building (formerly NZI) was originally constructed between 1914 & 1918 from Kairuru marble and represents a very early example of Chicago-styled striped classical building.
It marks an important transistion between Victorian commercial structures and modern office buildings.
Designed by William Gummer, the new structure was modelled on turn-of-the-century commercial buildings in America and was of Stripped Classical style.
The 164 unit building was refurbished in the early 1960's and again in the early 1990's.
